Flatulence is nothing but the development of gas in the digestive system which can lead to a lot of abdominal discomforts. In general, most of the people experience this flatulence health issue. Flatulence can be caused mainly because of normal bodily processes or can occur due to some condition that affects the digestive system.
Endogenous sources are those sources that are inside the stomach. Gas may build up as a by-product of certain foods digestion or when the foods are not completely digested. Whereas,
exogenous sources are those external sources that come from outside. We automatically swallow air when we drink, eat or swallow saliva, especially when more amount of saliva is produced, due to acid reflux or nausea.
If you eat heavy food, oily items and if your food is not digested completely by the small intestine or stomach, then flatulence can occur when it reaches the large intestine.
Why do some foods cause more gas in the belly?
Foods that are high in certain polysaccharides, especially oligosaccharides, such as inulin can cause more gas.
Foods that can worsen flatulence include:
Cashew, dairy products, yeast in baked products, pulses such as lentils and beans, cereals such as oats and wheat and vegetables such as beans, onions, garlic, cabbage, cauliflower, leeks, broccoli, artichokes.
Being aware of foods that cause excess flatulence can help reduce the problem. It is also recommended to be far away from chewing gums, and carbonated drinks as chewing gum make people swallow more air.
Tips to avoid flatulence
Flatulence or gas problem can be prevented by avoiding foods that are likely to cause it, such as the foods that
contain high levels of carbohydrates.
However, there are few items that contain carbohydrates and still are easier to digest. This carbohydrates food that are easier to digest include yogurt, rice, lettuce, grapes, citrus foods, and bananas.
You can also avoid this gas problem by eating smaller meals. Persons who eat four to six smaller meals each day will be far from flatulence, rather than the person who eat three large ones. Even eating food slowly can avoid flatulence as digestion starts from your mouth itself. So, it best to chew the food thoroughly before swallowing.
